Healing the Healer

Everyone has conscious and subconscious reasons as to why they pursuing a career in the healing or helping professions. This could be anything from a counselor, social worker, teacher, physical therapist, to nurse or doctor—and everything in between.

Paul has had a great deal of experience working with medical and healthcare professionals. He has worked as a trainer and supervisor to various healthcare professionals and has developed a training course to help professionals become more effective (The Intentional Clinician).

If you are considering attending graduate school for clinical psychology, counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, doctor of psychology, nursing, medical doctor, or any other related field, but are unsure if you would really be happy in the helping or healing professions, why not spend a small amount of money on counseling first before taking on a possible immense amount of student debt and devoting years of your life to school? Why not spend the time to figure out all of your motivations for pursuing a healing or helping profession and determine if the logistics of working in this career field is actually something you would enjoy doing day in and day out. Most healing or helping professions are much more involved than a typical office or service job. While finding a balance in the healing and helping professions is optimal, these types of professions are much more of a calling and lifestyle. So it is important to consider if healing in the context of the helping professions is right for your lifestyle—there are many other routes to become a healer in the world. There are many other jobs and contexts in which you can help and heal without necessarily being a “helping professional.” And there are always opportunities to help, no matter what your calling.
